So, you are about to start working on a new web design project. Wouldn’t it be great for everyone involved to be totally clued up on your businesses, what you do, who you are and your goals for the project? Well, utilising a web design briefing document is a great place to start!

So, what exactly is a design brief? It’s a short document that clarifies the strategy for a creative project. It documents the goals of the project and starts the plan for how you’ll get there.

What does a briefing document include?

To maximise the knowledge given to each party involved in the project it is important to share as much relevant information as possible. Here is a list of what may be expected in a briefing document:

  1. Basic company information
Give an insight into the business. The heritage, the size of business, the product or service being offered
  2. The product or service on offer from your business
Give details of the product or service you offer. What is your USP (Unique Selling Point)?
  3. The main people involved in the project
Ensure each person involved in the project are introduced to all others involved in the project. Ensure everyone is clear on all responsibilities. Everyone should know who is responsible for what.
  4. Competition
It is important to clarify the landscape so ensure you define your competition. This will enable the design agency to make you stand out from the crowd.
  5.  The Audience
Describe your customer. Their age, race, gender. What sort of brands do they interact with?
  6.  Scope of the project
What EXACTLY is the scope of the project? Will you need ongoing management? Do you require additional SEO support?
  7. What is the goal and how will it be measured?
What do you want your website to achieve for you? More leads? More traffic? How will this be measured?

A detailed and thoughtful website design brief will lead to a successful end product. Get this stage of the process right and you will ensure a successful project.
